Description
The Chinese historical civilisation represents the world’s oldest unbroken tradition of art and culture, reaching back some 5000 years. The artistic symbols used in Chinese rugs are common to all genres and techniques. Most of the patterns in Baotou or Pao-tou carpets are auspicious, such as fishing and woodworking, Deer, cranes, etc., to meet the market demand back to the dynasty of Han. Among the most common are the Deer, which represents longevity; the Bat and Tortoise; Bamboo, a symbol of long life; a wish to confer longevity on the beholder; and fish, which means freedom. At the same time, a Peacock is an emblem of beauty and dignity; Dragon is a mythological animal representing auspiciousness. It symbolizes power, strength, and good luck. The Buddhist and Taoist origins and other Religious symbols such as Swastika, which represents peace and harmony, could also be seen within the patterns, especially on the border. Most of the old Baotou or Pao-tou were woven over a massive area of northern China in Inner Mongolia and Shansi. The word Baotou or Pao-tou is the principal city of the region. The village rugs are all woven of hand-spun sheep's wool obtained locally; the colours mostly use blue from Indigo roots which were widely available, and sometimes in Orange Red shades from Madder. As they are commonly found in countless variants, enjoying the beauty of Baotou or Pao-tou is the simplest version in three shades of indigo on rugs made in small sizes and as saddle covers.
