It thrives in moist, well-draining soil and is happy in most soil types. Cotinus becomes drought tolerant as it matures. However, like all plants, pot-grown specimens do need to be watered more frequently. This patio tree tolerates partial shade but the vibrant colour, translucent foliage and smoky effect are best shown off in full sun.
