The Billiken is a mythical god-like figure created by illustrator Florence Pretz in the early 1900s. It is a monkey-like creature with pointed ears and is said to bring luck to those who purchase one, and even greater luck to those who gift one to another. The creature has a strong association with Saint Louis University in Missouri but has become popular all over the world, with its introduction to Japan occurring in 1908. There are various shrines and statues around the country dedicated to the Billiken.
